The lamp
There are several types of lamps, most burn fondue fluid (alcohol based). There are also paste burning lamps, gas or electric lamps.

The fluid lamps are not recommended to the newcomer (burn and fire risks), however they are the only one I use (if I have a choice) as their smell is an integral part of the setting.

The lamps have a lever allowing to adjust the size of the air intake holes around the flame. Open holes = maximum heat, closed holes = low heat.
